FAQ

What is a Professional Organizer? What does he/she do?

Professional Organizers don’t just help you get organized and make things tidy, they also set up systems and train you to maintain those systems on your own.  Anyone can “get organized” – the key is learning how to stay organized, which is where a Professional Organizer can help.

What kinds of clients do you work with?

Clients who get great results from our work together are:

  • actively engaged during our entire appointment;
  • able to work steadily over a course of weeks to complete a project with minimal starting and stopping; and
  • ready to make positive changes to their lives.

Why should I hire a Professional Organizer?  Shouldn’t I be able to organize things by myself?

You hire people to perform services that you’re not trained or able to do – like calling a plumber for a plumbing need or visiting a doctor about an illness.  People have different strengths, skills, and training.  You are ready to hire a Professional Organizer if you find yourself struggling to overcome clutter, you’re buried in paper, or you have unsuccessfully tried to get organized on your own in the past.  Through expertise, effective application of strategies and techniques, product knowledge, and decision-making skills, a Professional Organizer is equipped to identify and meet your needs by developing systems and solutions that are designed specifically for you and your space.

I’ve always been disorganized. Can you really help me?

No one is beyond help!  Anyone can learn basic organization principles, in the same way that people learn new skills in their occupation or for hobbies.  Just as each person has a unique personality, each of us also has a unique organizational style and particular needs.  Some techniques work for some people, but not for others.  Professional Organizers identify your needs and develop customized solutions and strategies that are tailored to fit your organizational personality; they can also show how to maintain the new systems.  If you would like to have follow-up at regular intervals, maintenance sessions are also available.

Couldn’t a friend or relative help me get organized?

Friends or relatives can be helpful in getting organized, under certain circumstances.  If you’re working with a Professional Organizer, a friend or relative can assist by moving items or by helping you with organizing tasks that the Professional Organizer has encouraged you to complete on your own.  But it can sometimes be frustrating to work with people you know well – they may be too close to the problem, or they’re too impatient to work with you to achieve an organized space.  Relationships can become strained under such conditions.  A Professional Organizer is a neutral third party who is not emotionally invested in the situation, who can provide objective help in making logical organizing decisions, and who serves as the catalyst for real solutions and positive living.  Additionally, a Professional Organizer is bound by professional confidentiality and will not disclose information related to your personal, financial, and legal matters.

How long does it take to get organized?

It depends on several factors:  the scope and complexity of the project, how many spaces are involved and their size, if other people help with the process, how much work you accomplish on your own in between sessions with the Professional Organizer, and how long it takes you to make decisions along the way.

Will you make me throw things away?

You have the final say on whether something leaves your space.  A Professional Organizer does ask questions to help you clarify the situation regarding an item and makes suggestions; the goal is to help you define what is important to you and arrange those things in the best way for you.  If you decide you don’t need some things, the Professional Organizer will donate the items to those who can use them, eliminating waste.  But ultimately, you have the final decision-making authority on what you will keep, and what will go to a charity, a recycling bin or service, or the trash.

I need help getting organized, but I’m embarrassed to have anyone see my space, let alone a Professional Organizer.

Clients often think that their space must be the worst we’ve ever seen.  Since you are emotionally invested in your space and possessions, it’s often the case that you are subjective, your own harshest critic.  Instead of being ashamed, you should be proud of having the courage to contact a Professional Organizer for assistance.  Our job is to help you get organized and establish peace and order in your space – not to judge you.  In order to reach the point where you can welcome others into your space, you only have to start by welcoming one person:  a Professional Organizer who works confidentially and compassionately with you to achieve your goals.

I’m concerned about someone seeing my private papers and information.

All information related to your home, office, belongings, and matters is 100% confidential. We value your trust and respect your privacy, and so we abide by the National Association of Professional Organizers’ Code of Ethics which states:

  • I will keep confidential all client information, both business and personal, including that which may be revealed by other organizers.
  • I will use proprietary client information only with the client’s permission.
  • I will keep client information confidential and not use it to benefit myself or my firm, or reveal this information to others.

What can I expect when you arrive?  How does it work?

You can call or email to make an appointment for an initial on-site consultation.  In order for us to accurately assess your needs and space, please do not tidy up, clean, or clear anything away before our meeting; no preparation is necessary.  At the consultation we’ll take a tour of the space(s) to be organized, and we’ll ask a series of detailed questions to assess the space and identify needs, goals, and challenges you have with disorganization. Usually, the first organizing session is scheduled.

Is this anything like the shows on TV?

The TV shows usually have a large crew behind the scenes who help get the work done in a certain (usually short) period of time.  What we do is work at your pace, within a time frame that you establish, just you and the Professional Organizer, and anyone you designate as a helper.
